For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.
Colossians 1:16-18
Who made the Heavens and the Earth? Where did we all come from? Why are we here? These all-too-common questions are sought to be answered by nearly every human soul, questions no mere religion could ever answer.
The answer is made clear here: all things that exist were created by Him, or “the Son of His love,” who is none other than Jesus (Colossians 1:13). This includes everything in heaven and all things on earth. Included in “all things” would be us. God created each and every one of us and fashioned us into His image (Genesis 1:26). He formed us while we were in the womb (Psalm 139:13). We were created by Him and for Him–for His pleasure and because of His will.
Also of note in this passage is the fact that all things, even those things we cannot see: various authorities, etc., were created by Him. Because He is the creator, He is “before all things” or the first one, of primary authority. Because He is the creator, He is not created. He is God.
His authority is further established here by Paul’s statement that He is the Head of the Body, the Body being the church. In other words He is the Chairman of the Board, Chief Operating Officer, the Head Honcho, the Big Cheese. He has preeminence in all things, He surpasses all others in all arenas.
With all of this being said, what problem in our life can we possibly have that He cannot solve? What issue cannot be conquered by and through Him? What heartache cannot be healed? Of what should we be afraid?
