He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins. Colossians 1:13-14
These two verses cap off the powerful prayer in Colossians 1:9-12 in such a dynamic, deal-closing way. Remember that the previous verse says “giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light.” What else could inspire us to give thanks than to rejoice in our deliverance?
We were once in the yoke of the power of darkness and under its influence. It’s amazing to think of how we were snatched out of that kingdom, rescued as it were, from a horrible end.
The biggest obstacle to praise, in my view, is spiritual amnesia. We often forget “from whence we came” as it were. We forget that “such were some of you.” When I look back at my life and I think about its trajectory it amazes me that I am not dead, drunk, or drugged out. Statistically*, I should have been.
