Who God Is

Open your Bible and start by reading Deuteronomy 6:4. This verse is known as the Shema (which means hear in Hebrew). To boil it down, it describes who God is. He is one God, existing in three Persons. He is self-sufficient, perfect, and the One and Only. Shema Yisra’el Adonai Eloheinu Adonai Ehad!

Deuteronomy 6:5 says, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.”  This verse commands what our response to Jehovah should be in response to who He is.  We are to love Him sincerely, firmly, and with the entirety of heart.

Disappointing God

When was the last time you did something and gave it all you had? Have you ever emptied your heart only to be disappointed? The one you loved so deeply betrayed you. The garden you beautifully manicured was neglected after you moved.  The career you enjoyed became eliminated when times turned lean.

We all have renditions of disappointment, and they come in many seasons. However, when frustrations arise, it’s an opportunity for the whole stream of our affections to point toward God. It’s okay if you’ve been distracted lately. I get in ruts where my thoughts are busy with everything but Christ.

Fortunately, we serve a Good, Good Father, and we need to be transparent and confess our lack of love to Him (newsflash: He already knows). It may feel more private to admit it only to yourself, but we shouldn’t find it strange or uncomfortable to run to the God who is Love.

Be Honest and Feel the Love of God

He will never deny you because of honesty, beloved. He is filled with compassion and abounds in love and faithfulness. He desires that you know Him, and He realizes that it is a journey. Be honest with Adonai (Hebrew word for Lord), and day by day, He will reveal to you His characteristics and swell your heart with a fierce love for Him.

Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Deuteronomy 6:4 (NIV)
