I am the first female born of all my cousins, and the second child after my brother. During family reunions, I paid the price for that. The boys would tag team to torment me, the only girl. Out of a sheer need to survive, I became a crafty little one. From then on, I loved playing games with them because I was a master cheater and had a great chance of winning. I was overpowered and I needed to win.

It was in my adult years that I learned to be a good sport and play with integrity. After being transformed by Jesus, I am now more inclined to look for win-win situations and know when to play for fun. Except when it comes to the spiritual world.

In our text, Paul is washing the mud out of our eyes and helping us seeing clearly. God has defeated the power of sin over our lives. Jesus won our battle on the cross. He stripped the enemy of ALL power, and seized an indisputable victory. We win not because we did something, but because we have been handed the prize, for free.

What Then

The devil and his minions make it their mission to torment us, daily. They remind us of our shortcomings, the weight we put on, the bills we need to pay, the bad word that crossed our lips while driving, the struggle we have in our marriages, the way our children behave, and so on and so forth. The goal? To steal, kill, and destroy. Steal our destinies and our joy, kill our relationships and our hope, destroy our lives and our faith…

While we may not see it with our own two eyes, there is a spiritual battle of cosmic proportions going on in the spirit world. The Bible tells us about it in Ephesians 6. We don’t wrestle against flesh and blood, but spiritual powers. Just like with my brother and cousins, we win. Except, no cheats this time, just the perfect victory of Christ on the cross, defeating all demonic powers, making them totally powerless. Did you get that yet? We win!

Take It Home

Action plan It isn’t easy to forget the enemy that is constantly fighting against us. Today let’s not forget the power of prayer. Let us take that weapon and go on to fight and win, in Jesus’ name. Let’s just say out loud, “Not today, Satan. You are defeated. I am a child of God and I reject the accusations against me. There is NO condemnation for those who are in Jesus Christ! I am free, forgiven and redeemed!”

Prayer Father, in a society that needs to understand and explain everything, I accept that there is a whole world I cannot see, and that I am called to watch and pray. Make me brave, give me the heart of a warrior and when I feel defeated, remind me of the victory of Christ on the cross. With You, we win. We are more than conquerors. In You, sin has lost its power and its grip on us. Let us walk in this truth daily. Amen.
