Friends in High Places
Because angels were present at the birth of Jesus, so are they in our traditional depictions of the nativity scene. Tradition usually has them in both children and adult versions, wearing a white robe, with European features, and a halo around their golden locks.
If you’ve read the book of Revelation, you know this is far from accurate. But that is not as important as to what they represent. Our text tells us of Angels worshipping the Lord. It adds that they were joined by others, the armies of heaven. We also have verses telling us that when just one sinner turns to God, there is a party in heaven (Luke 15:10). Now, I don’t know how angels party, but it must be glorious. And when we pray to God, and He moves on our behalf, He sends angels. They are at the service of God, not ours. But they help us all the time because God instructs them to.
The spiritual world is real, perhaps realer than anything we know. The Bible also teaches in Ephesians 6:12, “For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.” (NLT)
Could it be that your spouse is not your enemy and that you are facing a spiritual attack? That colleague at work may simply need Jesus and your prayers. And this depression you may be facing, it’s not because you are weak. The devil is out there to steal, kill, and destroy. You, my friend, have the victory in Jesus.
This Christmas, forgive those who have hurt you. Offer yourself that gift, and then to whomever. (If possible and safe to mend the relationship.) God can help. God can heal.
Be at peace too. Don’t fear evil. God is with you. “The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid?” (Psalm 27:1, NIV)
Prayer
God of heavenly armies, You know the troubles I am facing. You said that the battle is not mine but Yours. Send your angels to defeat the power of darkness at work in my life. Help me forgive the people who do me wrong and help me recognize that my battle really is not against them. Help me to be more diligent in loving them and praying for them. May I be the light this Christmas Season.
Closer to Christ
Who do you need to forgive today? You know what to do.
