By faith he (Moses) left Egypt without being afraid of the king’s anger. He kept on going as if he could see what is invisible. Hebrews 11:27

God’s Vision

Have you ever seen something on the horizon that no one else seemed to be able to see? Maybe you just knew that God was about to do something huge, but as you shared this God given vision with others, no one else could see what you were seeing. They might have been excited for you about this God given vision of the invisible, but you could tell they weren’t really buying it.

Moses’ Example

Remember Moses? He could see something invisible ahead of his people because God had given him a vision of freedom. He told the people about it, he proclaimed their coming freedom, but no one else could quite see what he saw. Fortunately, that didn’t stop Moses from being God’s instrument of deliverance for his people.

In Hebrews 11 the author is giving examples of great heroes of the faith to illustrate to his readers what it means to be a people of great faith. He uses Moses as an example of faithful obedience to a God given invisible vision. He abandoned fear and embraced confidence in the reality that God is ahead of us in the unknown.

After Moses led the people out of Egypt, crossed the Red Sea, and experienced true freedom from the shackles of slavery; they started to grumble. Any hardship they encountered caused them to conclude that things were better under a yoke of slavery. But Moses could see something ahead that no one else could recognize. God was ahead of them calling them forward. Moses kept his eyes focused on God. So he kept pushing them forward saying, “I can see it, just keep following me!” I would have said, “Fine, go back, you ungrateful people!” Thankfully, God chose the right leader for the Israelites.

A Similar Situation

I find myself in a similar situation. Not that I’m surrounded by people who are trying to go back from where they came, but my family is headed toward something invisible. Something we can only see by the grace of God. Something that hasn’t even started yet, and yet is already done! He’s given us special eyes for a new ministry before us, and when it gets discouraging we just return our eyes to that invisible vision and we are encouraged and reminded to keep pressing forward.

I can only imagine that God has given you eyes for something that is otherwise invisible. Something that hasn’t even started yet, but is already done by the grace of God! Keep pressing on, even when it seems slow going; even when discouragement creeps up to hold you back. Focus your attention, as other translations say, on the One who is invisible. God will make a way when there seems to be no way; that’s just who he is.
