Hebrews 10:23
“Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)”
It is a wonderful thing to consider that God is faithful. While I am faithless and my promises to God seldom amount to anything, I praise the Lord that He is faithful.
God made a covenant with His people during the time of Moses, and their response to it was, “All that the LORD hath spoken we will do.” Exodus 19:8. The people quickly forgot their response. Not long after God Himself spoke the Ten Commandments, the people were breaking their promise. “And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down out of the mount, the people gathered themselves together unto Aaron, and said unto him, Up, make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.” Exodus 32:1. The people made their promise based on their own ability to fulfill it. That is to say, they relied on self to be obedient, and this was the reason they failed so miserably.
A new covenant was made with the house of Israel that was based on better promises. “Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord. For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people: And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest. For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.” Hebrews 8:9. God made it possible to fulfill His covenant, not by the promises of men, not by the blood of animal sacrifices, but the blood and high priest ministry of Jesus. As a result of His ministry, we are able to come boldly into the throne room of God by faith. This is where lives are changed, sins are forgiven, and holiness is bestowed to humans who would otherwise suffer eternal death. We must hold fast to the faith we have in Jesus. His sacrifice is sufficient for us, and through Him God’s promises are sure. He is faithful that promised.
