Give Thanks Daily

It is the month we Americans celebrate the Thanksgiving Holiday, yet the Word tells us it is good to give thanks to the LORD daily – to declare His lovingkindness in the morning and His faithfulness at night.  I have to confess, however, I have struggled with my praise and thanksgiving to the Lord of late.  I love Him dearly, but I find myself  having such difficulty in expressing my gratitude to Him.  I think of Paul, as he wrote the Philippian Church, telling them of his prayers for them; how he “thanked God upon every remembrance of them”.  Paul was in prison when he wrote this letter, and he had much to be thankful for, so what is my excuse? I’m not in prison, but I have found in this season of my life I am still struggling.

Are You Struggling?

How about you, my friend?  Do you struggle to declare God’s lovingkindness in the morning and His faithfulness at night?  Do you look around the world and wonder what is good and right and lovely; what is there to be thankful for?  The Word tells us, tells me, that it is good to give thanks to the Lord. It is good to sing praises to His name, and that He, the Lord Jesus, is Most High. We are to declare in the morning, His lovingkindness as well as declaring His faithfulness in the evening.

So what is this passage saying?  Giving thanks to the Lord God is GOOD.  Singing praises to God’s name is GOOD.  And God is Most High.  I am to declare His love for me each morning and declare His faithfulness for me at night. If I truly love Jesus, I will obey His commands, and this Psalm tells me it is good for me to give thanks to the Lord and to sing praises to His name.  Giving thanks to the Lord, regardless of ones’ circumstances, gets your focus off yourself and onto God.  He is God Most High, creator and sustainer of the universe, of our very lives.

Despite My Circumstances

As I write this, I am asking myself questions – Do I give thanks to the Lord despite my circumstances? Do I really sing praise to His Name? Do I really understand what “Most High” means? Do I declare His love for me each morning and His faithfulness at night?  If not, then why?

How and what will I do to live this Psalm out?  What will you do, my friend?

It is good to give thanks to the LORD and to sing praises to Your Name, O Most High, to declare Your lovingkindness in the morning and Your faithfulness at night. Psalm 92:1-2
