What creative activity do you enjoy most?

I know, some of you are saying, “I don’t have a creative bone in my body.” But I’m sure that’s not true, because you are made in God’s image, and He is a creator. That means you have been created to create.

Maybe your creative activity is an artistic pursuit like sewing, drawing, or scrap-booking.

Maybe it’s a practical art like cooking, woodworking, or interior design.

Maybe it flies under the radar, like creative organization, working with numbers, or even activities with children.

Whatever creative activity you prefer, you can use it to praise God.

He’s the Master Artist. He created it all, even the materials we use to create things. He gave us the intellect and ability to create beautiful, useful, and practical things that reflect His glory.

I spent this weekend painting. My hands got messy and my eyes felt tired, but I felt uncommon happiness after painting.

I had to give up precious time to create those paintings. My floors desperately needed vacuuming. My laundry is piled up, again. Work assignments are waiting for me. But I didn’t regret putting those responsibilities on hold.

In my creative work, I felt a unique sense of peace.

While painting, I praised God for the beauty of His creation. I prayed about all kinds of things as my mind wandered freely in creative flow. I felt joyful and uplifted while I collected leaves from the woods and translated their beauty onto canvases. Nothing else in my week freed me like that time of creative worship.

When did you last enjoy a creative experience?

The busy holiday season is approaching with the unavoidable stress. I know how hard it is to find time for rest and renewal, especially in the upcoming weeks. But this year can be different.

How about including creativity in your schedule and using it as a time of worship?

Sure, you can make a craft. But you can also worship while you’re baking Christmas cookies or decorating the tree. While you’re hanging the lights or wrapping presents. You can praise God while you’re reorganizing a guest bedroom or making a Christmas gift for a loved one.

Whatever you do, you can use your creative time as a cue for praise and worship.
