Do small prayers seem silly to you? Maybe you feel okay approaching God with the big things, like health scares, accidents, job losses, or marriage crises. But what about the everyday small things? Do they really matter to God?
The Smallest Things Matter
The truth is, the smallest things in our lives greatly matter to God. He has numbered all the hairs on our heads (Matthew 10:30). Jesus used parables about small things like flowers, birds, grains of salt, and yeast to teach us spiritual truths. God notices the small things and deeply cares about all the details in your life. Your small prayers really do count in His eyes.
For example, the slow driver in front of you may be a small matter in your day. But this situation probably causes you frustration and possibly anger. If you lift that small matter up to God, He will grant you perspective, patience, and peace in the moment. God will comfort you as you bring small prayers to Him.
Another example is dealing with a difficult person. Perhaps this person isn’t harming or insulting you; they are just getting on your nerves. In the moment of irritation, you can offer up your feelings in prayer. God will help you be kind, compassionate, and loving through His power. He will use small prayers to make you more like Jesus.
Small Prayers Help Develop a Trusting Relationship
Our small prayers help us cultivate a more trusting relationship with God. Instead of approaching Him only when big things happen, you can meet God every day with smaller prayers. Invite Him into your smaller matters, and your faith will grow. Ask Him to help you study for a test, prepare a report, or teach your child a new skill. By covering these smaller matters in prayer, you will see God at work in your life. He will give you more joy, peace, and hope as you carry small matters up to Him in prayer.
If your faith is as small as a mustard seed, it can still move mountains. Our small prayers can also do wonderful things for God’s glory. They can be even more effective than one big prayer, because He will use them as seeds to grow your faith. Be faithful in offering small prayers to God. The more seeds you plant, the more fruitful your faith will be. Try offering small prayers every day this week and watch your trust in God expand.
Prayer
Lord, I trust You with all my prayers, even ones about small matters. Everything that happens in my life matters to You. I want my faith to grow as I speak small prayers. Help me see more of You in the smallest things, so my trust in You can expand. Amen.
“‘Because of your little faith,’ He told them. ‘For I assure you: If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will tell this mountain, “Move from here to there,” and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.'” Matthew 17:20 HCSB
