Jesus’ humility is a surprising and beautiful gift to us.
Consider this: The King of the World humbled himself to be human. The One who created the world endured dirt, sweat, pain, and heartache for you.
He came in a time without modern conveniences, internet, phones, even electricity. He was born into a poor family and never lived a life of ease.
Though he was innocent, he was mocked, spit upon, beaten and put to death.
He did all this for you…would you be that humble for anyone else?
Embrace Humility
In Matthew 20:20-24, his disciples were squabbling over who would be first in the kingdom of heaven. Humility was the furthest thing from their minds at that moment. I can just see him shaking his head, wondering if they would ever understand.
Yet he answered them gently, these men upon whom he would build his church. He pointed them again to his Father’s sovereignty. But they were indignant.
But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant. Matthew 20:26 NLT
Jesus wants us to embrace humility. To stoop, bend, take the low-totem-pole position. The place we wouldn’t choose, if it were up to us.
He wants to strip us of our pride so we can be more like him.
The Son of Man and Son of God who gave himself up for others. Who modeled humility better than anyone else ever has.
The Daily Struggle
Friend, this isn’t an easy verse to apply. Just like the disciples, we jockey for top positions. It’s in our human nature, and we’ll always struggle with this temptation this side of heaven.
However, if we meditate on this verse and make it our daily goal, Jesus will use it to change us.
I believe Jesus is working humility into my heart a little more every day. I truly want to be more like him, even if it means stooping and sometimes suffering.
Are you growing in humility by the day?
How does Jesus’ example inspire you?
Prayer
Jesus, thank you for your examples of humility. I confess that like the disciples, I often desire to be higher up, and I devalue the virtue of being humble. Today, I want to take a new path. Grow humility in me each day as I study your example. Amen.
