Do you feel trapped by a difficult problem? Perhaps you have a medical problem, a legal problem, or a relationship problem. Find hope in Psalm 91:2.

Trapped Like a Bird

When I walked into my living one morning last summer, I noticed my two cats behaving unusually.

Standing on their hind legs, they had their front paws propped up on the cold metal rim of the wood stove door and were staring intently through the glass-plated door into the dim interior.

Wondering what could possibly have them so enthralled, I joined them in peering into the stove. There, I saw a small bird fluttering in the ashes. Somehow the bird had fallen down the stove pipe and, because the chimney is so narrow, it was unable to fly back out. Despite its efforts to escape, it was hopelessly trapped. Moved with compassion for its plight, I set out on a mission to liberate it.

After locking my cats in a separate room, I opened all the doors and windows in my living room to give the bird plenty of exit points. Then, I carefully unsealed the wood stove door. Hungry for fresh air and open skies, the little bird rocketed out of the stove and straight out the back door, a little dusty but otherwise unharmed.

Sometimes in life, I feel like that bird—trapped by my problems with no discernible way out. Try as I might, I can’t untangle the trouble myself.  When those times come and I’m tempted to become discouraged, I like to remind myself that what seems impossible from my point of view is easily solvable from God’s perspective. He sees the doors that I can’t see, and He knows the perfect time to open them.

How about you?

Do you feel trapped by a difficult problem?

Perhaps you have a medical problem, a legal problem, or a relationship problem that feels insurmountable. Perhaps you’ve turned to the left, and you’ve turned to the right, and there is no solution in sight.

If so, find hope and comfort in the words of God found in Psalm 91:2: “Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him; I will protect him, because he knows my name” (NIV)

No matter how impossible your situation seems, God can make a way where there seems to be no way. While you wait for Him to rescue you, focus on loving Him and trusting Him. Hold fast to Him, and wait patiently for His deliverance. Just like the door eventually opened for my little bird, the door to freedom will open for you too.
