While on a recent journey through the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, my husband and I witnessed many amazing things. From grand waterfalls and statuesque light houses, to amazing feats of engineering. The Word tells us that the heavens declare the glory of the Lord, but on our trip, I was awestruck at the glory of God by the way He inspired the minds of people who imagined and engineered the things we saw.
First was the Point Iroquois Lighthouse, which is located on Whitefish Bay overlooking Lake Superior. As Jesus Christ is our Beacon steering us during the stormy times in our lives, so too, was this lighthouse a beacon of navigation to ore ships during storms on Lake Superior. From this lighthouse, we traveled to Sault Saint Marie to visit the Soo Locks. The Saint Mary River joins Lake Superior and Lake Huron and because navigating the rapids of the channel was difficult, engineers were inspired to construct a series of locks to raise and lower the water levels in order to allow ships and other vessels safe passage.
As we watched an ore ship go through the locks, I couldn’t help but think of how marvelous God is. Â As “He filled Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah with His Spirit in wisdom, understanding and knowledge in all craftsmanship” (Exodus 35:30-31) for the construction of the Tabernacle and its furnishings, so too had He inspired people with the ingenuity to design and build these locks.
Our Lord Jesus Christ, Creator of the world – His glory is portrayed and magnified everywhere. Â He is so faithful to open our eyes to behold His wonders, that we may praise His Name.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, may we be ever mindful that whatever we accomplish on earth, it is only because we are filled with Your wisdom, understanding, and knowledge. Â The talents we have are Yours and we give all praise, glory and honor for such things. Â Amen.
