Then Moses answered and said, “But suppose they will not believe me or listen to my voice; suppose they say, ‘The LORD has not appeared to you.’ ” So the LORD said to him, “What is that in your hand?” He said, “A rod.” Exodus 4:1-2

Suppose the Worst

When it comes to carrying out God’s will in our lives, do you suppose too much? Suppose we project potential and ultimately invalid reasons as to why God can’t use us. Suppose you’ve done that before, how should you proceed? I’d like to encourage you to be emboldened by Moses’ story of struggle. Moses supposed every possible negative; every reason why God’s plan wouldn’t work, even while he was dialoguing with the God of the universe (let that sink in). Talking to the One who doesn’t suppose (because He doesn’t need to!), Moses almost “supposed” himself out of God’s call.

Let’s presume you are in the same boat as Moses, and you are supposing yourself out of God’s plan. What do you need to know? Exactly this: If God has called, God will equip. Also note that God doesn’t need much to equip. In Moses’ case, God used a stick. Isn’t that great? Moses was feeling ill prepared, so God reassured him by showing him what He could do with a basic rod! When God calls you (as He calls all of us), He will bestow upon you what you need. Suppose you don’t have much, He can still use you; suppose you are weak and feel unusable, that’s ok! All He needs is a simple stick. May we all stop supposing the worst, assuming we aren’t qualified, and start listening and following His intentions and believing the best in our great God!
