Daily Devotion - Daniel 6:4 - Under Scrutiny

Then the high officials and the satraps sought to find a ground for complaint against Daniel with regard to the kingdom, but they could find no ground for complaint or any fault, because he was faithful, and no error or fault was found in him. Daniel 6:4 (ESV)

When we think of being under scrutiny, the image can evoke a sense of discomfort. However, for believers, scrutiny often comes with the territory. Daniel’s experience illustrates this perfectly. He was a man of extraordinary integrity, yet he was also a prime target for those seeking to find fault in him.

The Reality of Being Under Scrutiny

If you are serving the Lord faithfully, expect to be watched. Those around you, perhaps in your workplace, community, or even in your family, may seek to find fault in your conduct as a follower of Christ. This is not uncommon; it’s a reality for many believers.

As followers of Jesus, we have to understand that scrutiny is not just a challenge but an opportunity—a chance to witness how our lives represent our faith. The forces that create scrutiny may try to draw you into negativity, but realize that their motives are often rooted in their insecurities or disbelief.

Finding Fault in the Faultless

What is deeply insightful about this passage is how diligently the administrators looked for error in Daniel’s life but found none. Why?

It's because he was committed to living a life that was faithful, honest, and responsible.

As believers, we must ask ourselves if we can stand under that same scrutiny. Would those around us find us to be faithful? Honest? Responsible? If we remind ourselves of the scrutiny Daniel faced, we can take positive steps to ensure that our examinations yield godly results.

God’s Perspective Matters Most

Here is the uplifting truth: when you are serving God with sincerity, their criticisms carry no weight. The more important question is, how does God view your actions?

• Can God declare you faithful, honest, and responsible?
• Or do you feel the sharp edge of His conviction as you stand in the mirror of His Word?

• Have there been moments where you’ve acted contrary to your profession as a believer?
• Do you feel Him to be your Judge or your Advocate?
• In your heart of hearts, are you walking in a manner worthy of your calling?

Heavenly Father, thank You for the example of Daniel, who walked faithfully with integrity in a world that sought to criticize him. Help us to model our lives after his, being committed to faithfulness, honesty, and responsibility.
