Daily Devotion - Matthew 18:19-20 - The Power of Agreement in Prayer

Scripture Reference
"19 Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. 20 For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them." Matthew 18:19-20 (ESV)
As believers, we often seek the presence of God in our lives through prayer—an essentially personal and intimate connection with our Heavenly Father. But sometimes, we might not fully understand the profound impact that praying together with others can have on our spiritual lives. Today, let’s dive into Matthew 18:19-20 and explore the beautiful truth about praying in agreement and the divine presence that comes when we gather in His name.
The Necessity of Community in Prayer
Prayer is both a personal and communal activity. When we enter our prayer closets and engage in solitary prayer, we undoubtedly experience a deep connection with God. But that’s only part of the picture.
Jesus highlights the importance of praying with others. When we unite our hearts in prayer, a powerful synergy occurs. God works marvelously in the midst of those who gather in His name.

Have you ever been in a group prayer where the atmosphere felt charged with faith?
That’s the power of unity!
The Strength of Agreement
Jesus tells us that if two or more agree upon something we ask, God will respond. This is not just a casual suggestion; it is a divine promise.
- Understanding Agreement: Before we pray collectively, it’s crucial that we align our hearts on what we are praying for. This involves clarity and communication among those involved in prayer. That's why we often spend time asking and considering prayer requests before we pray. This helps us align.
- Reflection Point: Think about the last time you prayed with someone. Did you discuss what you were going to pray for, or did you dive straight in? Many times, our prayers may differ from one another, diluting their collective strength.
Overcoming Disunity in Prayer
Have you noticed that when we gather to pray, discussions can sometimes lead us off track? Let’s keep it real—there are times when the individual prayer requests may not resonate with the hearts of those gathered.
When we do family prayer time at the end of the night, I often have to play sheep herder with my kids as I direct them back on topic. We start discussing off-topic things that lead us astray and can sometimes lead to arguments, diluting this precious time we have together.
Before praying, consider taking a moment to discuss your collective needs. Agreeing on prayer priorities solidifies your purpose and unclutters the pathway to God’s heart. How often do we miss out on the richness of communal prayer due to unaddressed differences? By coming together, we not only petition God, but we also strengthen one another.
Jesus is Present in our Prayers
Imagine this: every time we gather for prayer, Jesus promises to be right there with us. What a comforting and inspiring thought!
His Presence Brings Power: When Jesus is present, it’s as though the heavens open up above us. He hears our collective cries and lifts them to the Father, heightening our sense of connection and strengthening our faith.

The Calling to Pray Together
Reflecting on our shared experiences with prayer, are you embracing opportunities to be united in prayer with others? Individual prayer is vital, but Jesus calls us to community as well.
- Seek Opportunities: Whether in small groups, church gatherings, or even with family, consider how you can pray together more intentionally. See how God moves when hearts are united in purpose.
- Strengthen Each Other: Encourage friends and family members to share their prayer requests, and commit to lifting them up together. There’s incredible strength and assurance in knowing that you are part of a prayerful community.
Let’s strive to enhance our approach to prayer. Embrace the opportunity to pray with others, to agree on what we are praying for, and to experience the incredible presence of Jesus among us.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of prayer and for the promise that You are present among us when we gather in Your name. Help us to unite our hearts with others as we seek Your will and purpose in our lives. May we experience the power of agreement in prayer, and may our faith be strengthened as we support one another. In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.
