Now to the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift but as his due. And to the one who does not work but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness Romans 4:4-5 (ESV)

The Apostle Paul couldn’t be clearer in these verses from Romans. He draws a definitive line between earning and receiving, between work and grace. In our culture, where effort is often linked to merit, this idea of salvation as a gift can be revolutionary. It’s not about what we do, but about what Christ has done. Let’s break this down to understand this essential truth for our daily lives; Jesus did it all!

The Unmistakable Truth of Grace

Imagine for a moment the concept of wages. If you work hard at your job, you expect to be paid for your services. There’s an exchange: your labor for payment. This concept is deeply entrenched in our society, and yet, Paul challenges us to look beyond this transactional mindset when it comes to salvation.

  • Grace is Unmerited: It’s offered freely without strings attached. Jesus, through His sacrifice on the cross, did all the work required for our salvation. We bring nothing to the table apart from our need for Him.
  • Salvation is a Gift: Like receiving a beautifully wrapped present, we need only to accept it. How often do we try to unwrap our salvation through our own efforts, only to find that it was never meant to be earned?

The Work of Jesus on the Cross

Let’s consider how monumental Jesus’ sacrifice is:

  • He took our condemnation: Each one of us deserved punishment for our sins. Jesus voluntarily took that upon Himself, eradicating our guilt, and setting us free.
  • He fulfilled the law’s demands: Only someone who lived a sinless life could do this. Jesus met every requirement for righteousness, allowing us to be viewed not as sinful mortals but as children of God.
  • He opened the door to the Father: When He cried out, “It is finished,” the veil in the temple tore, symbolizing the access we now have to God.

Living Out Our Salvation

Now, we must face a pivotal question: If salvation is a gift, how should we respond? Here’s where Paul emphasizes an important link between faith and works.

We Don’t Work for Salvation: Our efforts to please God do not earn us favor in His sight. It’s crucial to understand that you cannot earn your way into heaven. Salvation is solely through faith in Jesus Christ.

We Do Work Because of Salvation: Authentic faith produces fruit. Our lives should reflect the transformative power of Christ within us. It’s not about grinding away to prove ourselves; it’s about allowing Christ’s power to shine through us.

Signs of Genuine Faith

If we are to evaluate our lives, we must ask: How do our actions align with our beliefs? Are we showing the love and righteousness of Christ in all we do? Here are some indicators:

  • Service to Others: Genuine faith manifests itself in acts of service. Serving in our communities or churches is a natural overflow of a heart changed by Christ.
  • Obedience to His Calling: God equips each of us with unique gifts and callings. Have you busy overhauling the sabotage in your life to serve Him more earnestly? If we ignore His call, we drift into disobedience.
  • Reflection: Are your conversations and relationships marked by kindness and grace? If we strive to embody Christ in our daily interactions, we reflect who He is.

Embracing the truth that "Jesus did it all" is liberating! Salvation is not a burden we carry—it's a glorious gift we celebrate. When we understand this, our lives become a testimony of His incredible grace. It inspires us to live passionately for Him, understanding that our actions are an outpouring of the love we’ve received.

So, let’s be reminded today that to live in Christ means to actively engage in the work of Christ. Our living reflects our salvation, urging us not just to accept the gift but to share it with the world around us.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the incredible gift of salvation that we could never earn. Help us to always remember that it is through grace we are saved, and let this truth inspire us to serve You wholeheartedly. May our lives reflect Your love to others, and may we be obedient to the tasks You have set before us. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
